People are becoming more and more concerned about taking care of their bodies, which has lead to a major increase in the consumption of products that help to restore and maintain beautiful skin, hair and nails. The success of <strong>MINERVA Research Labs’</strong> products has created a new market category &#8211; “liquid beauty supplements”.  Today I have the pleasure to speak to <strong>Tony Sanguinetti</strong>, Founder and Managing Director of<strong> MINERVA Research Labs Ltd.</strong></p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Your business values science and research. What inspired you to start this business? How did the idea of creating beverages come to mind?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Everything started with a trip to Japan back in 2009. I became fascinated by the reverence Japanese women had for beauty as an art. In particular, I noticed that a holistic skincare approach was key to their youthful appearance and that their diet was an essential part of their daily beauty regimes. This inspired me to develop a line of products for the Western market, that encompasses the Japanese approach to youthful radiant skin.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">The main ingredient in your products is collagen. What are the main benefits of this element?</h3>

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and provides structural support for skin and other connective tissues like joints, ligaments and muscles. Collagen is responsible for the skin’s strength and resilience as well as the smooth, plump appearance of young healthy skin. Produced by special cells called fibroblasts that are found in the lower layer of the skin called the dermis, collagen production occurs continuously throughout our lives. However, with time collagen levels start to decline &#8211; there is a drop in production and an increase in degradation. The collagen’s structure becomes more fragile and brittle leading to a weakening of the skin’s structural support. The skin loses volume and firmness; it starts to thin and wrinkles begin to appear.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The hydrolysed collagen contained in our product is derived from Tilapia fish. It is treated to reduce its molecular weight by approximately 100 times and as a result the hydrolysed collagen (or bioactive collagen peptides) are small enough to be absorbed in the small intestine into the blood stream to be delivered across the body.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Once in the dermis the bioactive collagen peptides have a dual benefit: they provide the building blocks for the production for new collagen 2) plus it has recently been scientifically proven that they reactivate fibroblast proliferation which in turn increases collagen production.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">What are the functions of your beauty supplement? In which way is it better than a lotion or serum?</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The beneficial effects of our products have been proven in several clinical studies. For example, the daily consumption of GOLD COLLAGEN® has been proven to increase skin hydration (+12% in 3 weeks), reduce the appearance of wrinkles (-27% in 6 weeks) and improve skin suppleness (+20% in 9 weeks). In studies, consumers also reported an increase in skin radiance (72% agree) and smoothness (76% agree) with 89% saying that they would recommend the product to a friend.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Beauty is becoming more and more important to our modern society. How would you describe the significance of this feature? What is beauty to you?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To me beauty is about harmony. The criteria for judging beauty have recently been evolving to reflect specific cultures, roles in society and personalities. In an ever fast moving and fully digitalised society, appearance is definitely becoming a more important factor when one has to form an opinion about another person.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Many people say that nowadays, the view on beauty has become distorted. Do you agree with this statement? If not, why?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I cannot agree that the view of beauty has become distorted. Beauty is subjective and is influenced by and evolves with time, culture and society. Whatever beauty may have meant at any point in time, from thousands of years ago to the future, it will always reflect its current time even if not aligned with older views of beauty.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">It seems like your products are mostly oriented towards customers who are women. Are only women interested in these kinds of products? What about men? What is their perspective on health and beauty?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Perhaps, yes, woman can  spend much more time and money looking after their skin, hair and nails.  However, men are becoming more and more aware of their skin appearance. There is a growing demand for products addressing such men’s needs. A growing number of men are using skincare treatments to maintain their appearance and protect their skin; therefore, a reasonable number of our customers are men. They particularly enjoy our product ACTIVE GOLD COLLAGEN created for men and women with an active and busy lifestyle. According to Technavio latest research an ever increasing number of men are investing in skin care products such as anti-aging, sun protection, and anti-wrinkle products. For example, more than 40% of men in the UK, use facial moisturizers according to the Technavio report. As mentioned, from an analysis of our customer base we notice that more and more men start their day with a sip of Gold Collagen®.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">At the moment, your product line is dedicated to skin, hair and nail care. Do you plan on extending your product range? If so, what sort of products would you like to produce?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I’m very proud of the success of our products which has created a new market category &#8211; “liquid beauty supplements”. The key values of MINERVA Research Labs’ products are: 1) innovative; 2) efficacious; 3) based on the best quality ingredients; 4) produced with best available technology and 5) clinically tested. We collaborate with several Universities in the UK and Italy to develop the most efficacious formulation and measure accurately the benefits provided by the new products.  At present we have several new product concepts in the pipeline. All product concepts undergo a thorough scientific analysis before they are launched. Until our pipeline products have been demonstrated to satisfy our strict testing procedure it is difficult to say which one will make it into the market.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The essence of CLUO is that if you put quality good stuff in, you get quality good stuff out.  Its not rocket science.  Because CLUO is jam packed with minerals, vitamins, anti oxidants and all of your essential amino acids, if you put this into your body, your body will love you back. It has everything you need to give you beauty inside and outside. In addition to this, we have added Vit C and Zinc, which are both proven to contribute to the maintenance of healthy skin. This is why we say “<strong>Beauty Radiates from Within</strong>”.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The typical CLUO target market would be ladies who are any of these: 25+ female, into health &amp; wellness, affluent, takes vitamins, professionals, goes to the gym, City focus, image conscious.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">You have three different flavours. Do you have any plans to introduce new flavors? Which flavour is your favorite?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We are in new product development at the moment and we have another range in the pipeline that we are going to launch at Specialty &amp; Fine Food Fair in September. Can’t tell you what it is yet, but we’re really excited about it so watch this space. My favourite is the Mango as I’m a tropical girl.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Why beauty and healthy drinks are getting more popular among consumers these days?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">People are realising that you can put something onto your skin if you want to, to make you look better, but the best way to do it is to put the goodness into your body and let it shine outwards.  The beauty of CLUO (pardon the pun) is that even though it’s not a cure of any kind, it solves many problems simply because our bodies crave the minerals and vitamins etc and when it doesn’t get it, it doesn’t function properly, like a car with no oil.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">My other hat that I wear is that of CEO of The Jarrett Foundation an international children’s charity.  When we were working in Jamaica, I stumbled across Moringa being sold in a local market.  I had never heard of it.  When I was told about it being known as the “Miracle Tree” and was told about its amazing properties, I decided to buy a bag as I was looking for something to help me stay healthy as I was recovering from Cancer.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When I got back I would boil the leaves every day until I got fed up, as it became a chore.  I just wanted to buy a bottle.  I searched high and low, but there was no such drink.  So I created one.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">So what are your achievements so far with CLUO?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The first day of the business we won an Award at Food Matters Live 2015.  We won “Highly Commended” for Innovation.  We were voted for by 15 global companies including Tesco, Pepsico and Unilever.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Nowadays, social responsibility is a big thing. Tell us about CLUO charity program.<span class="im"><br />
</span></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As mentioned earlier, I also run The Jarrett Foundation an international children’s charity.  When I went to The Gambia a few years ago I visited some schools and I was shocked to see that there were school that had absolutely no resources.  In fact they had no furniture either.  Some classes would be held outside under a tree.   Those lucky enough to have furniture, children were often sitting 5 and 6 to a bench made for 2.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">A percentage of every bottle sold will go to the charity to be able to ship more furniture to help the education of disadvantaged children in developing countries.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><span class="im">What the future holds for CLUO? Do you have a vision where you would like to see your brand <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1211471662"><span class="aQJ">5 years from now</span></span>?<br />

<p style="text-align: justify;">I would like CLUO to be a global brand.  We have already had enquiries from Kuwait, Oman, Dubai, India and as far as Mongolia. In the UK I would like it to be listed in the fine food stores, health stores, gyms, chemists etc. so that it is easily accessible to this growing market.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><span class="im">You have fulfilled your dream and defeated Cancer. You could be an inspiration for many people. However, who was your inspiration?<br />

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Do you have any tips for our drinkpreneurs?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Get yourself lots and lots of advise re manufacturing. If you get it wrong it will cause you unnecessary time and money to unpick and many sleepless nights just to get back to the start. As we found out, but that’s another story for another day.</p>

Right now it&#8217;s available in many England parts. However, there was time when Bliss was just in Your mind. Could you tell us the very beginning of Bliss? How did you came up with such idea?</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I was really getting into juicing and was fascinated by how beneficial &amp; convenient drinking fruit &amp; vegetables was for you.  However it can be really time consuming to make your own being a mum so I&#8217;d look to buy some from the shops.  I was shocked by the offering and how high in sugar the ones on the shelf were and the lack of true products that contained a good amount of vegetable in, so I decide to make my own again and offering to to friends &amp; family to get there thoughts&#8230;..and they loved them!</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>At the very beginning, what kind of difficulties did you expected during development and release of Bliss? What Bliss has that other brands don&#8217;t?</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Bliss is a unique product in what is becoming a complex market, we&#8217;re keeping our message simple that fruit &amp; vegetable juices are good for you in a balanced portion which keeps natural sugars &amp; calories low.  We have as much as 50% lower natural sugar content than many of the brands on the shelf today, whilst maintain great, refreshing taste.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>At the first sight it seems that Bliss target market should be young women, who are concerned about healthy lifestyle. Can you describe the &#8220;ideal consumer&#8221;?</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Eventually we want everyone to be our customer but initially Our ideal consumer is someone who is conscious about the nutritional value of the products they eat &amp; drink, so they can appreciate the uniqueness of Bliss in comparison to other brands.</p>
<h4><strong>Since Bliss has been in the market for almost 3 years, what was the hardest during this time? Did your predictions before release were right? Or did Bliss outcome your expectations?</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The hardest is the education process that fruit &amp; vegetable juices need to be balanced to be most beneficial to the consumer.  However with the amount of stuff in the public eye about sugar etc this is becoming easier.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">We&#8217;re totally commited to the UK at present and providing a valid solution to the confusion around the juice category at present.  We plan to reach other countries over the next few years but are solely focused on become a household name in the UK first.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Can you tell us more about juice cleanse system? If I am correct there are 4 different types of them. What differences do they have compering each other?</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We actually have 5 juices for the cleanse, this range of ingredients provides such a mixture of vitamins &amp; nutrients that compliment each other and are designed to restore and heal our most prized possession &#8211; ourselves!. Our juice cleanse is a simple way to bring yourself back the basics of life and food &#8211; incorporating all natural, easy-digested, nutrient-dense juices into your daily routine in the most convenient way possible.</p>

<p>It was a unique opportunity to meet David Beardmore &#8211; the senior buyer for soft drinks and juices category from Tesco’s and to deliver your sales pitch for a concept product and hear his honest and constructive critique. The panel of mentors, judges and speakers during the event was unexpectedly high profile – combined with FMCG marketing and design experts, who created, worked with and reinvented brands for P&amp;G, Coca-Cola, Unilever and Tesco’s, VC and Financiers, who funded many food and beverage companies over the last 10 years and participated in shaping the industry as it is, distribution professionals, who carried many brands to the shelves of the major retailers as well as to the independent outlets.</p>
